I’m trying to get a bit more accuracy into the anatomy of our protagonists… practicing in public used to make me a little timid, but these days I’m less bothered.
I bought an app from the iTunes store that allows a mannequin to be moved to any position you fancy, so I can see what sort of shapes I should be drawing, but it’s proved a bit of a pain to get the model in the right place.
I know Stephen Silver has a much simpler app, which is basically a range of characters drawn from a range of angles… but that’s £7…
Anyway.. practice, practice practice.

Dog Soldiers was on last night.. I missed it, but the term has been in my mind throughout the story.. WHY has Duvall been making these Dog Soldiers. Well for a couple of reasons.. or three reasons.
1. He’s barking mad…
2.. well you’ll have to wait and see.
Lots of DELETER no3 black ink in todays pic, in fact a lot of it all over my hands. I looked at a “how to make your own cintiq” site last week… this week I find myself far too busy to even consider starting another project I might not finish. Looks like my day job has an extension till March 2012, so I have a job for another year. I guess that makes me one of a very lucky few.
This page, just didn’t work, no matter what I did with it, so in the end I gave up… it is what it is.. a necessary step, a little further up the ladder before the roller coaster begins.
There are legends of strange animals on the forest, including the Kangaroos, which ended up in the Winnie the Poo stories…
Art Stuff: This one is tricky, as I fiddled so much, I’m not sure what I did where.. The demon was drawn on 250 gsm Bristol Board with a dip pen and DELETER No 4 ink, most of the rest was re-worked in photoshop elements… it’s strange, as I’ve been practicing and drawing things with various paper and inks, and the way I do things has changed quite a great deal over the last month. I’m inking up a page at the minute on A3 FRISK CS2 paper, which was what I used all the time for illustrations back in the day, as it’s very white.
Music: no music, I have the Hellboy Extras DVD playing in a tiny window in the corner of the screen.
I’ve been putting in some detail to the next part of the story… and whilst Adam has been obliged to change some of the Novel to match ideas in the plot synopsis… I’m changing some bits to reflect ideas he’s had…I’d like to change the next few pages, but what’s done is done. It’s in the queue.
Anyway, this fella here is a direct result of one of Adam’s ideas.. you can read his novelisation over at http://www.wychwolf.co.uk
When I was at the UK Webcomix thing, I was rather taken by a tentacled bandana worn by our table neighbour… so I bought one…
It arrived today, and spurred me into having another go at the tentacled fiend whom we first meet in the sewers of London. Whilst I was deliberately trying a different style, I am quite surprised at the marked contrast in the style, of page 1, and tonights effort.
Page 5, I thought the idea for looking into the eyes of a murder victim came to me from the Neil Gaimen Sandman story, but apparently Dom says something similar happens in the under-rated “Wild wild west” Will Smith steampunk cowboy epic. Oh Well. I nicked the opaque eyes from Heroes season one, where Mr Isaac goes into a trance. The whole thing is borrowed from elsewhere, perhaps sometime I’ll have an original thought.
Art stuff: pencilled on draper layout paper, then inked with a Rotring isograph 0.5mm, some of the thicker blacks added with a Letraset TRIA marker, and a Shinhan Touch twin marker . Scanned in to photoshop elements 4, on mac, with canoscan LIDE 25 at 300 dpi as Black and white. Tidied up, converted to greyscale, then RGB. Coloured using web safe palette, then given sepia effect by removing colour, adjusting further by removing blue, adding red, darkening and adding noise. I left the “blood” layer untouched by mistake, but liked the idea that there is sepia, and RED.
Soundtrack: Nick Cave and the Bad seeds, ‘there she goes my beautiful world’, Tom Waits, ‘make it rain’, Elbow, “station approach’, Billy Bragg, ‘A new England’
And so we begin.
The first page that was actually drawn for the comic was page 4 or 5… the first three pages, act as a brief introduction to the characters, giving a hint at their roles.
The poor old tentacled creature is a staple of my doodles, tentacles have some bizarre fascination to me… but don’t cry for him, he’ll very definitely be back.
